Elle, a Sámi girl from a reindeer-herding family, is subjected to the racism of the 1930s — forced to wear traditional Sámi clothing and undergo racial-biological examinations. She decides to run away and “become Swedish.” But in her struggle for status and acceptance as a true Swede, she is forced to sever ties with her family and deny the culture that she grew up in.
